Plato: Republic Book I: David Sansone Plato: Republic Book I
David Sansone
R2,444 Discovery Miles 24 440 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Plato's Republic is a central text in the Western philosophical tradition and also a specimen of its author's exceptional literary and dramatic skill. The first book introduces, and conspicuously fails to answer, the question: What is justice? It also introduces the sophist Thrasymachus, who is quite certain that he knows what justice is, namely that it is nothing other than what the dominant power in the state considers to be in its own interest. The contentious confrontation between Thrasymachus and Socrates sets the stage for Plato's controversial construction of an ideal state in which the true nature of justice will be revealed. The Commentary draws attention to the way Plato anticipates developments in later books, thus serving as an introduction to Republic as a whole. Particular attention is paid to Plato's language and style, so that students of Greek literature as well as philosophy are well served.

The number of eating disorders patients presenting with symptoms of self-harm is growing quickly, and yet there is surprisingly little known about this unique population. Self-Harm Behavior and Eating Disorders explores the prevalent but largely uncharted relationship between self-injury behaviors and eating disorders symptoms. In the first major book to focus on this area, a renowned group of international scholars and practitioners addresses the subject from a variety of theoretical and practical perspectives. The book is categorized into sections covering epidemiology, psychodynamics, assessment, and a final section covering potential treatment options, including dialectical behavioral therapy, cognitive therapy, interventions strategies, group therapy, and pharmacological approaches. This unrivaled collection of case studies, theoretical exploration, and practical application forms a benchmark for the field, and offers a stepping-stone for new research and innovative treatment strategies. In an area with little available information, previously spread out among diffuse sources, this volume represents the state-of-the-field resource for anyone working with complex eating disorders patients.

Personality Disorders and Eating Disorders - Exploring the Frontier (Paperback): Randy A. Sansone, John L. Levitt Personality Disorders and Eating Disorders - Exploring the Frontier (Paperback)
Randy A. Sansone, John L. Levitt
R1,662 Discovery Miles 16 620 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Personality Disorders and Eating Disorders explores and defines the multifaceted relationship between these two fields in a cogent synthesis of prevalence, etiology, and treatment. The book brings together leading specialists in both fields, with a clinical focus on such topical issues as genetics, drug abuse, and childhood trauma-as they relate to each field and as they affect the relationship between the two disorders. Therapists who treat eating disorders will find the material on treatment approaches especially helpful in formulating interventions with particularly difficult patients. Therapists who work with patients with personality disorders will find that the interface between personality and eating disorders is relevant to various aspects of self-destructive behavior observed in these individuals. This unique book enhances the assessment and treatment of individuals suffering from personality disorders and eating disorders, and it augments the understanding of both populations, while establishing a foundation for discussing each as they interface with one another.

Working with Parents and Infants - A Mind-Body Integration Approach (Paperback): Antonella Sansone Working with Parents and Infants - A Mind-Body Integration Approach (Paperback)
Antonella Sansone
R742 Discovery Miles 7 420 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The book examines the field of early emotions and the fact that the human body has frequently been excluded from psychological and relational processes. Central to the book is an examination of the ways in which the unconscious life of the mind expresses itself through a woman's body, and conversely, the manner in which the body's experiences impinge upon the mind.Drawing on the case of a difficult mother-infant relationship, infant observations, psychoanalytic literature and work in neighboring disciplines, Sansone considers how early experiences of touch and movement become stored within the body and how such experiences may be acted out in adult life and affect the mother-infant early relationship. Pregnancy and childbirth are a crucial time for parents, since they reactivate unresolved issues, which left untreated, can develop more complex chronic conditions or even pathology. In contrast to the dualism of Western science and medicine, the author assumes the embodiment of the human mind, the inseparability of psyche and soma. She also explores the embodiment of emotional health as well as of emotional illness and their foundation in earliest experiences.

Personality Disorders and Eating Disorders - Exploring the Frontier (Hardcover): Randy A. Sansone, John L. Levitt Personality Disorders and Eating Disorders - Exploring the Frontier (Hardcover)
Randy A. Sansone, John L. Levitt
R4,905 Discovery Miles 49 050 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Despite the overwhelming evidence supporting a multifaceted relationship between personality disorders and eating disorders, few attempts have been made to explore the interface between these two areas in a cogent synthesis with prevalence, etiology, and treatment approach with respect to both conditions. Sansone & Levitt propose to explore and define this relationship, with a single-volume of contributions on the intersection between the two fields. This work includes chapter contributions from authors both in the eating-disorder field and personality-disorder field, with a clinical focus, in a readable format.
Divided into seven sections, the work begins with conceptualization of personality disorders, and then moves into an exploration of epidemiology and of etiology. The fourth section focuses on assessment in both fields, and the fifth section provides an overview of specific personality disorders. The sixth section discusses treatment approaches, and the volume closes with the prognostic implications of comorbid personality disorders in eating disorders. Topics include such topical issues as genetics, drug abuse, and childhood trauma, as they relate to both fields and as they affect the relationship between the two forms of disorders.
This volume provides stronger assessment and treatment of individuals suffering from personality disorders and eating disorders and enhances the understanding of both fields while establishing a foundation for discussing each as they interface with one another.

Mothers, Babies and their Body Language (Paperback): Antonella Sansone Mothers, Babies and their Body Language (Paperback)
Antonella Sansone
R1,386 Discovery Miles 13 860 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book is an attempt to describe, through an observational study from pregnancy to the early months of postnatal life, the complex interactions between mother and baby. The infants the author observed showed amazing skills at engaging their mothers in conversation. Psychology so far has paid little attention to this primal psychobiological, rhythmic communication as an important factor in child development. Studies on babies' minds have long been manipulated by the perspective of adult convenience. Research and clinical literature have overlooked the relationship between the woman's "bodyself image" and the quality of interactions with her baby, which led the author to write this book. When the mother's integrated "bodyself image" and the related self-confidence enable her to receive and contain the fears, crying, and anger of the baby, she is able to give these feelings back to the baby with a renewed light rather than reject them, thus she allows the baby to acknowledge them through a mirroring process. If this process does not take place, the baby may ignore the frightening feelings and, as opposed this being an ideal situation, she/he can become unable to monitor them in later life. This book acknowledges the impossibility of giving general guidelines to individual parents, and telling any mother how she should best look after her own baby. Instructive books often drive a mother away from her own feelings and needs. The key is for the mother to look into herself and discover and use her own resources.

Plato: Menexenus (Paperback): David Sansone Plato: Menexenus (Paperback)
David Sansone
R931 Discovery Miles 9 310 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Plato challenges his readers by depicting an elderly Socrates as an enthusiastic student of rhetoric who has learned from his teacher Aspasia to recite an inspiring funeral oration, an oration that conspicuously refers to events occurring after the deaths of Socrates and Aspasia, an oration that Aspasia, as a woman and a non-Athenian, was not eligible to deliver over the Athenians who died in war. This commentary, the first in English in over 100 years, assists the modern reader in confronting Plato's challenge. The Introduction sets the dialogue in the context of the traditional Athenian funeral oration and of Plato's ongoing critique of contemporary rhetoric. The Commentary, which is well suited to the needs and interests of intermediate students of Classical Greek, provides guidance on grammatical and historical matters, while allowing the student to appreciate Plato's mastery of Greek prose style and critique of democratic ideology.

Roger P. Roess, Gene Sansone
R4,301 Discovery Miles 43 010 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Wheels That Drove New York tells the fascinating story of how a public transportation system helped transform a small trading community on the southern tip of Manhattan island to a world financial capital that is home to more than 8,000,000 people. From the earliest days of horse-drawn conveyances to the wonders of one of the world's largest and most efficient subways, the story links the developing history of the City itself to the growth and development of its public transit system. Along the way, the key role of played by the inventors, builders, financiers, and managers of the system are highlighted. New York began as a fur trading outpost run by the Dutch West India Company, established after the discovery and exploration of New York Harbor and its great river by Henry Hudson. It was eventually taken over by the British, and the magnificent harbor provided for a growing center of trade. Trade spurred industry, initially those needed to support the shipping industry, later spreading to various products for export. When DeWitt Clinton built the Erie Canal, which linked New York Harbor to the Great Lakes, New York became the center of trade for all products moving into and out of the mid-west. As industry grew, New York became a magnate for immigrants seeking refuge in a new land of opportunity. The City's population continued to expand. Both water and land barriers, however, forced virtually the entire population to live south of what is now 14th Street. Densities grew dangerously, and brought both disease and conflict to the poorer quarters of the Five Towns. To expand, the City needed to conquer land and water barriers, primarily with a public transportation system. By the time of the Civil War, the City was at a breaking point. The horse-drawn public conveyances that had provided all of the public transportation services since the 1820's needed to be replaced with something more effective and efficient. First came the elevated railroads, initially powered by steam engines. With the invention of electricity and the electric traction motor, the elevated's were electrified, and a trolley system emerged. Finally, in 1904, the City opened its first subway. From there, the City's growth to northern Manhattan and to the "outer boroughs" of Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx exploded. The Wheels That Drove New York takes us through the present day, and discusses the many challenges that the transit system has had to face over the years. It also traces the conversion of the system from fully private operations (through the elevated railways) to the fully public system that exists today, and the problems that this transformation has created along the way.

Photodisintegration of the Deuteron - A Review of Theory and Experiment (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed.... Photodisintegration of the Deuteron - A Review of Theory and Experiment (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1991)
H. Arenhoevel, M Sanzone
R2,942 Discovery Miles 29 420 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

More than 50 years ago, in 1934, Chadwick and Goldhaber (ChG 34) published a paper entitled "A 'Nuclear Photo-effect' Disintegration of the Diplon by -y-Rays."l in the introduction: They noted "By analogy with the excitation and ionisation of atoms by light, one might expect that any complex nucleus should be excited or 'ionised', that is, disintegrated, by -y-rays of suitable energy," and furthermore: "Heavy hydrogen was chosen as the element first to be examined, because the diplon has a small mass defect and also because it is the simplest of all nuclear systems and its properties are as important in nuclear theory as the hydrogen is in atomic theory." Almost at the same time, in 1935, the first theoretical paper on the photodisinte gration of the deuteron entitled "Quantum theory of the diplon" by Bethe and Peierls (BeP 35) appeared. It is not without significance that these two papers mark the be ginning of photonuclear physics in general and emphasize in particular the special role the two-body system has played in nuclear physics since then and still plays. A steady flow of experimental and theoretical papers on deuteron photo disintegration and its inverse reaction, n-p capture, shows the continuing interest in this fundamental process (see fig. 1.1)."

Blackness Without Ethnicity - Constructing Race in Brazil (Hardcover, New): L. Sansone Blackness Without Ethnicity - Constructing Race in Brazil (Hardcover, New)
L. Sansone
R1,560 Discovery Miles 15 600 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Drawing on 15 years of research in Bahia, Rio de Janeiro, Suriname, and the Netherlands, Sansone explores the very different ways that race and ethnicity are constructed in Brazil and the rest of Latin America. He compares Latin American conceptions of race to US and European notions of race that are defined by clearly identifiable black-white ethnicities. Sansone argues that understanding more complex, ambiguous notions of culture and identity will expand international discourse on race and move it away from American definitions that inadequately describe racial difference. He also explores the effects of globalization on constructions of race.
